Young fiddlers preserve Maine’s musical legacy
The Pineland Fiddlers is a touring ensemble of children age eight to 16 who play traditional fiddle music from Maine and Canada. All are students of Ellen Gawler, one of Maine’s top folk fiddlers, and most also study classical violin at the Pineland Suzuki School. They perform throughout Maine at fairs, festivals, concerts and dances and their big, lively fiddle-orchestra sound has impressed crowds at venues such as the Chocolate Church in Bath, the Common Ground Fair, the L.L. Bean concert series, Johnson Hall Live, the Franco-American Heritage Center, the Kingfield POPS and the Skye Theater. They have toured Ireland, Turkmenistan, Quebec City, Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island. They have released two CDs.
These young musicians -- some of Maine’s most talented -- play the whole range of traditional music that makes up Maine’s musical legacy: traditional New England fiddle tunes, as well Quebecois and Celtic reels, jigs, ballads, waltzes and more. They are the youth who will preserve Maine’s musical legacy for our children and grandchildren.

Maine Fiddling in their hands.”

The Pineland Fiddlers put on a great show at the Kingfield POPS last June with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra, Boardman Family and Gawler Family. Check them out in this terrific clip from WSKI-TV. The music is an arrangement of Irish tunes that Greg Boardman put together just for the POPS. And the music is performed by the Fiddlers, the Gawlers, the Boardmans and the BSO!
